Dragon Dance

The dragon dance is perhaps one of the most recognizable trademarks of the Chinese New Year. Originating from old Chinese tradition, the dragon is thought to bring luck and fortune. It is for this reason that it is believed that the longer the dragon in a dragon dance, the more blessing it will bring to the community. The dragon dance is characterized by a long dragon puppet being manipulated by multiple performers, called the dragon dancers. The start of the dance is marked by the head and tail of the puppet meeting. Then, another performer holding a long rod with a ball attached to the top appears seemingly guiding the dragon. As the ball is manipulated, the head and body of the dragon follow its direction to simulate the movement of the beloved dragon dance.

Lion Dance

Lion dancing is another of the Chinese New Year's most celebrated performances. Like the Chinese Dragon, lions are thought to bring fortune. Furthermore, it is always believed that lions have the ability to ward off evil spirits. One "lion" is normally controlled by a pair of dancers. Essentially, these two dancers act as the body of the lion. The dancer in front acts as the head and front limbs, whereas the dancer behind acts as the hind legs and back of the lion. Working together, the pair attempts to mimic the natural actions and presence of the Chinese beast.
